Community
Community @ The Bikery
At The Bikery, community is at the heart of everything we do. Our group rides, events, and partnerships are designed to bring people together, creating opportunities to connect, share experiences, and enjoy cycling in a welcoming environment. From relaxed social rides to larger community activities, our aim is to make cycling fun, accessible and supportive for people of all ages and abilities.
These events do more than just get people on bikes – they encourage healthier lifestyles, reduce car dependency, and strengthen community ties. By promoting sustainable travel choices and giving residents the chance to enjoy the outdoors together, we’re helping to build a community that is active, inclusive and environmentally responsible.
- Boost wellbeing

Community Programmes
Dr
Bikery
Mobile bike maintenance sessions providing safety checks and minor repairs at workplaces, schools and events across the community.
A free service that provides on-site bike maintenance, safety checks and minor repairs to encourage cycling. One of our qualified mechanics will come to your location (workplace, school, events) and perform inspections and quick fixes like brake adjustments, tuning gears, pumping tyres and then make advisories on larger problems that would require a bike shop. Sometimes parts might be replaced at a small cost.
If you would be interested in hosting a Dr Bikery session at your location please contact us.
Bikeability
Mechanic Support
Qualified mechanic support delivering pre-course bike checks and adjustments to ensure all bikes are roadworthy before training sessions.
We provide qualified mechanic support for Bikeability training sessions across Aberdeenshire. This includes carrying out pre-course bike checks and making minor adjustments or repairs to ensure bikes are roadworthy before training begins.
A formal Dr Bike-style session is delivered to inspect each bike, helping ensure participants can take part safely and confidently. Support may also be available during training sessions if small mechanical issues arise.
We are available to support nurseries and schools with Bikeability Mechanic Support.
Community
Bike Scheme
Affordable bikes and referral support helping people access cycling through low-cost sales or free bikes in the community when needed locally.
We want everyone in our community to be able to access cycling. To help remove cost barriers, we keep our refurbished bikes priced as affordably as possible within our shop.
If purchasing a bike is still not an option, we also offer a bike referral scheme. Individuals can book an appointment with the Advice Team in the Community Support Hub, where eligibility for a free bike can be assessed. During this appointment, support may also be offered to help maximise household income where appropriate.
Free bikes provided through this scheme are funded by Nestrans.
Volunteer
With Us
Volunteer salvage sessions offering hands-on experience recycling bikes while building skills, confidence and pathways to qualifications for volunteers.
We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds and experience levels to support our work while learning new skills. Our Volunteer Salvage Sessions run every Wednesday and are led by our Training Mechanic, focusing on dismantling and salvaging end-of-life bikes for reuse and recycling.
As volunteers develop their skills, we provide individual training plans and opportunities to progress. Once in-house training is complete, we are also happy to support volunteers who wish to work towards professional qualifications.
Volunteering with The Bikery offers hands-on experience, confidence building, and a chance to contribute positively to the community.
Young People
& Schools
Work with young people and schools providing maintenance training, work experience and confidence-building cycling opportunities for local learners.
We work with young people to help them develop practical bike maintenance skills while gaining valuable experience. In partnership with The Gordon Schools, we offer timetable support to help young people work towards Dynamic Youth Awards and provide work experience placements that support achievement of the King’s Award.
During school holidays, we run bike maintenance classes for young people, including ‘On Yer Bike’ sessions for 14 to 18-year-olds. Younger participants are welcome to attend Bike Owner Basics courses when accompanied by a supervising adult.
Our Volunteer Salvage Sessions are also open to young people aged 14 and over during the summer holidays.
Partnership
Working
Working collaboratively with local organisations to expand cycling opportunities, share resources and maximise community impact across the region.
At The Bikery, we believe strong partnerships help maximise community impact. We work closely with local organisations to support and expand cycling opportunities across Huntly and the wider area.
Collaborating with the Huntly Travel Hub, Greenmyres, and community groups supporting e-bike hire, pump track events, and confidence-building activities. We also work with the Community Payback Team, helping recycle bikes while supporting skill development.
Through local and national cycling networks, we continue to promote the benefits of cycling and active travel as widely as possible.
